Literature: Included in MDD’s exhibition Fringe, this work on paper by American artist William N. Copley was executed in 1991 during which time the artist produced an extraordinary group of drawings. Born in 1919 (†1996), William N. Copley began painting in the late 1940s. After a short stint as a dealer of Surrealist art, Copley developed a figurative narrative style that departed radically from the dominant trends of postwar painting. Copley’s drawing practice emerged in the late 1950s as a means to generate ideas for paintings, and later, in 1991, Copley made a prolific cycle of drawings that revisited images from earlier work. Lot 5, Untitled (1991), is a prime example. The figure is shown performing a move from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, a ballet referenced in several other works by Copley from the period.
