V-J Day "The Kiss" Photo Signed by George Mendonsa and Greta Friedman

Measuring 8" x 10", No place, undated. A black and white photograph, taken by Victor Jorgensen, of a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square after news broke of the Japanese surrender in World War II. Signed and inscribed by the sailor in the photo, "George Mendonsa" as "Times Square / V.J. Day 8/14/45 / USS the Sullivan / 1942-1946 / George Mendonsa / QM 1/c" in blue ink. Beneath Mendosa's signature is that of the woman who received the famous kiss "Greta Friedman" in black ink. Printed on Kodak Professional photo paper. Fine condition with a strong vibrant inscription.

This famous moment was captured by Alfred Eisenstaedt and published in Life magazine, titled "V-J Day in Times Square" (although more often known as "The Kiss"). That photograph went on to become one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century. This photograph, taken from a slightly different angle, was captured by Victor Jorgensen, who was also a naval seaman. His photograph was published in The New York Times under the title "Kissing the War Goodbye".
