20th century brown full calf, somewhat worn, gilt border, gilt inner dentelles, slightly faded gilt spine in six compartments. Some minor foxing, some marginal soiling. First Aldine edition, variant 'B' with four additional leaves in quire A.

When first issued by Aldus Manutius in October 1502, quire A contained only eight leaves; this Aldus soon replaced with a twelve-leaf quire incorporating twenty-four additional passages found in a manuscript at Vienna, prefaced with a letter to Johannes Cuspinianus dated 1 April 1503.
The work comprises anecdotes and examples drawn from the Roman and Greek worlds, covering religion, omens, social customs, good and evil conduct, good fortune, military stratagems, a.o.
Provenance: Sven Borgström was born in Malmö in 1927 and worked as a chemist in Stockholm, Malmö and Lund. His fine library, which was built up over many years, consists mainly of older books dated from the 16th century to the late 18th century. His book-collecting began, as it perhaps should, with an incunabula. Borgström's interests included printers, book bindings, book illustrations, and he was interested in history, travel and maps. As a result of previous coin collecting, the subject of numismatics was also of interest in his library. Sven Borgström died 95 years old.Show more
