Known only to the experts, Van Gogh’s Bust of a Shepherd is a painting of particular significance. Vincent mentioned it in late October 1884, in a letter to his brother Theo.

Provenance: Alfred Johan Salomon Van Lier Collection, from Utrecht, until 1950 (reported by Bart de la Faille), then in 1954, the portrait belonged to HC Van Loo in Nijmegen, then passed into the hands of the art dealer Smulders in Nijmegen. Acquired by the current owner in 1998 at an auction in Amsterdam.

Old trace of restoration on the back due to a vertical tear.
Painting probably having had its varnish removed and re-varnished a few years ago.
