An oil on beveled panel by Victor Marais-Milton. Depicting a seated cardinal smoking a pipe. Artist's signature to the lower right. Painted on beveled panel appropriate to period. Frame measures H 25.75" x L 22.75".
Condition: Having a heavy craquelure surface with evidence of overpaint (notable to left side edge,). Evidence of restoration of minor overpaint highlighted on sitter's feet and carpet design under chair. It is our opinion that a decorator in the 1950's applied a coating over the original gold leaf frame and the applicator was sloppy going over left edge. Restoration under sitter's chair was a professional attempt to impaint and overpaint craqueleur.
