Collection of items from a Vietnamese Ranger. [1965-75].

Collection of items from a Vietnamese Ranger. [1965-75]. Comprising: South Vietnamese Army Rangers small battle flag, in nylon, yellow ground with 3 thin horizontal red stripes, 11.5 x 17 inches (290 x 440 mm);
WITH: a ARVN Rangers Elite Tiger Force patch with embroidered Biet Dong Quan, above a tigers head, on a yellow background, yellow denoting sector IV. 3.5 x 2.5 inches (90 x 65 mm).
WITH: rare RVN Bowie knife, the blade unmarked but leather scabbard stamped "RVN 1965". Some light wear. Boxed.

A fine group of items gathered from a Vietnamese Ranger operating in the Tiger Force. The ARVN was formed in 1955 under the French, and with the arrival of US ground troops in Vietnam in 1965, the AVRN (Tiger Force) was expanded and various elite squads (Reaction Element Corps) set up to perform special ops. The Vietnam Rangers, the Biet Dong Quan, was first formed in 1960 but expanded to battalion size in 1965. The Vietnamese Rangers were the hardiest and fearsome of all the Vietnam Army units, and in some cases, from 1965-67, under US command, were reputed to have committed various atrocities, in their guerilla operations to seek out and destroy the hidden Viet Cong enemy. The Vietnamese Rangers fought to the end in 1975, defending the Saigon airport, but very few survived.
