This elegant celadon vase was created by Suwa Sozan I [1851-1922], one of Japan's foremost masters of modern celadon ceramics, and is accompanied by its original signed wooden box.The vase features a graceful baluster form with a tall flaring neck, covered in a luminous pale celadon glaze of exceptional purity and refinement. Low-relief aquatic plants emerge subtly beneath the glaze, while several small red and grey fish are applied in delicate relief, swimming naturally across the surface. The restrained composition evokes the tranquil beauty of an underwater landscape, balancing refined craftsmanship with poetic simplicity.Suwa Sozan devoted much of his career to the study of Chinese Longquan celadon and Southern Song imperial wares, successfully adapting these traditions into a distinctly Japanese aesthetic. His celadon works received wide acclaim both in Japan and internationally, establishing him as one of the leading ceramic artists of the Meiji and Taisho periods.Combining flawless celadon glaze, elegant proportions, and understated decoration, this vase exemplifies Sozan's mastery of ceramic artistry and represents an outstanding example of modern Japanese celadon.
