Victorian Gold Locket Hand Painted Enamel Cherub

[ translate ]

Cupid’s golden arrow would shoot true love through the air to pierce an unsuspecting heart. His arrow of lead, however, would spread something else, something sinister; it would make a heart run away. The symbol of the arrow carries a sentiment of romance and lust, of chance and of risk; for it glitters, but it wounds. To the Victorians, an arrow could also refer to mortality, as at its core, an arrow is a deadly weapon.; This antique European locket was handcrafted around 1880. The enameled front features an adorable cherub pulling an arrow from his pack and holding a bow in his other hand. He’s on a beach with a swan in the background and tropical trees all around. Due to love and wear, this hefty pendant locket has two tiny chips in the enamel, one at the very top and a slightly larger one at the side. This piece was made in 18 karat gold and has been acid tested. When opened, a space for a keepsake is revealed. The overall measurements of this locket are 31.7 x 24 x 7.5 mm, and it weighs 9.2 grams.; For a stylish conversation starter, this cherub locket with shiny gold will most certainly do.;
