**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A hefty cast-iron axe head comprised of an ovoid socket with a thick butt, a sturdy neck, and a curved edge, still sharp for cutting. The socketed end is for mounting this axe head on a shaft or handle. A black patina with russet areas covers the surface, but silvery areas still gleam through. Axes like this may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat, as well as more utilitarian purposes such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. Size: 6.5" L x 2.5" H (16.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Starborn Creations, Sedona, Arizona, USA; ex- German collection, purportedly found in Lithuania
