Vitaly Gavrilovich Tikhov (b. Kyev area 1876, d. St. Petersburg)

“Brittany”. Lively activity at the harbor pier with fishermen and fisherwomen landing the day's catch. Signed and dated V. Tikhov 1917 (in Cyrillic). Oil on board. 106 × 155 cm.

Exhibited: The 45th exhibition of The Wanderes, St. Petersburg 1917 no. 292. The 46th exhibition of The Wanderes, St. Petersburg 1917 no. 190.

In 1904–1912 Tikhov went to St. Petersburg to study drawing at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating, he was awarded a travel scholarship and went to France. This marked a turning point in his career, when he received impressionistic inspiration. During his stay in France he completed the painting presented at this auction, entitled “Bretagne”. In 1916 he became a member of the Russian realist artist group “The Wanderers” and the painting “Bretagne” was on their exhibitions 1917. Tikhov was naturally eager to show one of his newest most seminal works so far.
