Volkmar Potter Plaque: 1st White House c.1900

[ translate ]

Volkmar Pottery, located in New York (Brooklyn) produced a series of historical plaques (large plates, essentially, with holes drilled in the foot rim so they could be hung on the wall). Most of the views involved George Washington. This example shows the “First White House, Cherry St., New York” was probably commissioned by the “George Washington Memorial Association,” hence the initials “G.W.M.A.” at the top of the plaque and probably the crossed swords and wreath at the bottom. The pottery plaque dates c. 1900. It is 11” in diameter and slightly lighter in weight than the others I have listed. Underglaze blue decoration, with blue border. Hand printed, under glaze: “First White House Cherry St., N.Y.” on the backside along with an impressed “Volkmar” (only “VOLK” is visible). This example is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, lines, etc. American Art Pottery at its best.
