WALTER REDER
(1915 – 1991) Austrian SS commander and war criminal who served with the SS Division Totenkopf and the SS Division Reichsführer-SS. He and the unit under his command committed the Marzabotto massacre in Italy in 1944. After the war, he was convicted of war crimes in Italy, including the Marzabotto massacre and murders at other villages near Bologna during so-called anti-partisan sweeps, and for ordering the execution of 2,700 Italian civilians in Tuscany and Emilia. T.L.S. as a prisoner of war, 1p. 4to., Gaeta, June, 1976, a form letter reading in part: '...On the occasion of my 30th POW Christmas I received greetings and presents from home and from various countries on the five continents, which brought light and warmth to my 'hermitage' and made me feel that I was not forgotten at my 'southern outpost'. I am very happy about it and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart with this newsletter for the loving and faithful remembrance...PS. I have nine shoeboxes full of Christmas, birthday and Easter greetings and only now have I got around to sending this newsletter...' Fine.
