WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (PA/RI, 1833-1905)

"The Evening Star", oil on canvas, over wooden panel, unsigned, original old label verso with title, artist's name, original price of $650 "from Avery's Gallery, 368 5 Ave. N.Y." Housed in a large ornately carved and gilt frame having Goupil label, OS: 32 3/4" x 52 3/4", SS: 19 1/4" x 39 1/4". Very good condition.Richards was born in Philadelphia, and began working as a teen designing brass fixtures at a manufactory. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and made his first trip to Europe in 1855. He became a follower of the Hudson River School, with studios in Philadelphia and Cape May, NJ. By 1890, he resided in Newport, Rhode Island, was working mostly in seascapes by then, and is considered an early American proponent of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Provenance: Avery's was Richards representative in New York. From a Private Collection.
