Condition: Very good condition. Restored upper right corner, small rubbing at upper right in the area of the black border.
Description: The lithograph shown here by Wilhelm Meyerheim, brother of Eduard Meyerheim and offspring of this painter family so important for Berlin, shows the Prussian royal couple walking in the garden grounds of Charlottenhof Palace. In the background you can see the classicistic portal system and the column sculpture in the pond in front of it. For the royal couple, the site had a special significance: Friedrich Wilhelm's father donated it to the Crown Prince in 1825, shortly after his marriage to Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria. The lithograph was probably made around the time of Friedrich Wilhelm's accession to the throne in 1840, because the signature of the picture already indicates both as "royal couple". In at least one further depiction both present themselves again in front of Charlottenhof Palace, but this time less 'lifelike'. The present sheet presents the king as a protective leader without displaying power insignia. The officer in the background wears more of the royal couple's clothes, thus alluding to the relaxed and naturalness of the situation in order to convey closeness to the people and generate sympathy. Under these aspects, the rare lithograph throws an interesting light on the aspect of self-portrayal in this early phase of Friedrich Wilhelm's reign.

Beschreibung: Die hier gezeigte Lithographie Wilhelm Meyerheims, Bruder des Eduard Meyerheim und Spross dieser für Berlin so wichtigen Malerfamilie, zeigt das preußische Königspaar beim Wandeln im Gartengelände von Schloss Charlottenhof. Im Hintergrund erkennt man die klassizistische Portalanlage und die Säulenskulptur in dem davorliegenden Teich. Für das Königspaar hatte die Anlage eine besondere Bedeutung: Friedrich Wilhelms Vater schenkte sie dem Kronprinzen 1825, kurz nach dessen Heirat mit Elisabeth Ludovika von Bayern. Die Lithographie dürfte um die Zeit von Friedrich Wilhelms Thronbesteigung 1840 entstanden sein, denn die Unterschrift des Bildes führt beide bereits als „Königspaar“. In mindestens einer weiteren Darstellung präsentieren sich beide erneut vor Schloss Charlottenhof, diesmal aber weniger ‚lebensnah‘. Das vorliegende Blatt präsentiert den König als schützenden Führer ohne Zurschaustellung von Machtinsignien. Der Offizier im Hintergrund trägt weitere Kleidungsstücke des Königspaares und spielt somit auf die Ungezwungenheit und Natürlichkeit der Situation an, um so Volksnähe zu vermitteln und Sympathie zu generieren. Unter diesen Aspekten wirft die seltene Lithographie ein interessantes Licht auf den Aspekt der Selbstdarstellung in dieser frühen Phase von Friedrich Wilhelms Regentschaft.
