WW1 5th Bn Essex Regiment Military Cross. Italian Croce de Guerra Group of Four Medals.
Awarded to Captain Arthur Bartlett Wales MC, who was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry at Ypres and in the post war years was elected Mayor Of Hove Sussex. Comprising: Military Cross CAPT A WALES 5TH ESSEX REGT BELGIUM 1917, British War Medal, Victory Medal, MID oak eaf CAPT, Italian Croce de Guerra. Group mounted for display, Italian Cross detached from suspension ring ... Accompanied by detailed research. Military Cross London Gazette 3rd June 1918 Mention in Despatches x3 London Gazette 25th May 1917, 1st January 1919, 6th June 1919. Italian Croce de Guerra London Gazette 17th May 1919. Captain Arthur Bartlett Wales MC was educated at Hove High School and in 1913 was elected a Councillor in 1913. In January 1916 he was commissioned into the Essex Regiment being posted to the 5th Bn, he was soon posted to a Trench Mortar Battery. He served in France and a local newspaper announced the award of the MC stating marked ability and courage under very heavy shell fire during the Ypres offensive October 1917. He was posted to the Italian Front and after the end of the War, remained a Territorial Officer of the 5th Bn Essex Regiment. He was elected Mayor of Hove in 1928 and in 1935 he resigned his commission due to age. He died in 1953.
