WWI US AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE HAND MADE FLAG

[ translate ]

Attractive and unique World War I era flag made from multiple pieces to signify service in the 9th Section American Field Service, a multinational Amublance corps which operated in World War I shuttling wounded soldiers from the front lines to rear area hospitals prior to American entry into the war. The base of this flag is a French tricolor, measuring approximately 15" across and 12" tall. Centered on this flag is a smaller silk 48 star American flag measuring approximately 12" across and 7" tall. In the center of that is a white cotton circle with sewn-on felt red cross and a brass "9" in the center of that -- the insignia of the 9th Section, American Field Service. In the upper left corner of the flag there is a WWI era French Croix de Guerre medal, a French Croix de Guerre miniature fourragere, and a French Croix de Guerre lapel ribbon. Many AFS sections were awarded the Croix de Guerre for their service in France during the early days of the war. The Croix de Guerre pieces are sewn in place and have left a light discoloration below the planchet of the medal on the upper left field of the American flag. Otherwise, the flag and all its components are in excellent condition. Excellent
