WWII JAPANESE ARISAKA TYPE 99 MARINE WAR TROPHY

[ translate ]

SN 90915. 21.75" barrel bolt action 7.7mm bolt action rifle. WWII Japanese Arisaka Type 99 sporter. Retains original chrysanthemum marking on the receiver. Right side of the butt stock has a soldier personalization which reads "AF Green. June 15, 1944. Siapan. Marianas Is." The Battle of Saipan was fought from June 15 to July 9th 1944, and the primary American force was comprised of Marines from the 5th Marine Amphibious Force and 4th Marine Divisions. The Marine Corps landed over 70,000 Marines onto the Island of Saipan to dislodge tens of thousands of Japanese defenders as part of the Pacific Theater "island hopping" strategy. The battle is also noteworthy because of the estimated 5,000 suicides of Japanese soldiers and civilians who would rather give up their lives than accept defeat by the Americans. This rifle appears to have been taken by a US Marine as a souvenir of the battle. The front end of the barrel has been cut down in what is sometimes referred to as a "duffel bag cut" meaning it was shortened just enough to fit into a duffel bag for transport home. There is considerable aging to the metal parts of the gun, and evidence of pitting. Bore is fair with similar aging. Mechanically, the rifle still functions as it was designed to, but it is not recommended as a shooter. It is a historical artifact from a particularly costly battle of the Pacific theater of World War II. Good*
