London: printed for Henry Herringman, 1682. 8vo (6 5/8 x 4 1/8in; 172 x 106mm), pp. [i-xii],1-289[-290]. Engraved portrait frontispiece by P. Vandreban after Sir Peter Lely. Title printed in red and black. Late 18th-century speckled sheep, spine gilt, black morocco title label. Condition: text with neat repair to pp.153/154, facsimile text replaces 8 words and some other letters from p.154; binding slightly scuffed, and with corners bumped, small splits to joints. Provenance: early indistinct inscription.

An attractive copy of the expanded fourth edition of this popular work, first published in 1645. A 17th century star, contemporaries wrote that his poetry was "fit to serve as a Standard, for all succeeding poems" (G. Langbaine), and that he was "the Parent of English Verse, and the first that shew'd us our Tongue had Beauty and Numbers in it" (F. Atterbury).
