[ translate ]

(Graz 1905–1977)
A lively scene in a courtyard, signed W. Langhammer, watercolour on paper, 33.5 x 48 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)

Walter Langhammer, born in Graz in 1905, studied in Vienna with Hans Tichy and Josef Jungwirth. He participated in numerous exhibitions of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. In 1938 he emigrated to Bombay, India, which became a haven for many German-speaking refugees. There he achieved his artistic breakthrough. Already in 1939, he won the gold medal of the Bombay Art Society. Later, he took over the post of Art Director of the Times of India, the largest daily newspaper in India.
In this lot, we look directly into the interior of an arcade courtyard, which is probably adjacent to a mosque. Langhammer captures the hustle and bustle of the interior of the courtyard with a fresh, vibrant colour palette.
