Wari Wood Finial / Staff w/ Shaman Visage
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. An intriguing staff or finial carved from a slender piece of wood. The rod is a cylindrical with a pointed tip like a stake for setting upright in the ground. The top features an anthropomorphic face with a slightly protruding nose as well as incised eyes and mouth. Atop the head are two horns or part of a headdress that branches up in a V shape. The horns may indicate that the anthropomorphic figure depicted is intended to be a shaman. An interesting ritualistic piece! Size: 23.5" L x 3" W (59.7 cm x 7.6 cm)
