Weber, Gottfried -The Theory of Musical Composition, Volumes I and II- 1851
". . . Treated with a View to a Naturally Consecutive Arrangement of Topics"
. We are pleased to offer the first British appearance of this important work by prominent German writer on music, particularly music theory, Gottfried Weber.
. This was Weber's most important work, which popularised several important concepts of music theory such as Vogler's 'Mehrdeutigkeit' (multiple meaning) and adapted Vogler's idea of applying roman numeral designations to chords. Weber added the use of upper and lower case symbols, demonstrating not only the position of each chord but also the quality of each chord.
. The Roman numeral system of analysis is still in use all around the world (though with some modifications) .
. The translation into English by James F. Warner was the first work on music theory to be translated into English for publication in the United States. This UK printing was then edited with additions drawn from the original (third) German edition by John Bishop of Cheltenham.
2 volumes, 25cm x 17cm, half-titles, Volume I, xxv (including corrections) + pp416. Volume II, xiv +pp417-944 (including corrections.) Extensive engraved musical quotations. Recased in blue cloth with original back-strips laid on; new end-papers. Recent cloth spine with gilt lettering. Volume I back strip starting to come away. Pencil inscription to both title pages.
