One of the first paintings Marstrand painted when he reached Rome at the age of 25 was “En fængelsscene i Rom” (A Prison Scene in Rome), dated 1837 (The Nivagaard Collection, Inv. No. 0202NMK). The unusual scene captivated him - he had not seen anything like it in Copenhagen - and he worked with the prison motif several times, as here, where the prisoner tries to make contact with the outside world.
