[Margaret FULLER (1810-1850)] - Oliver Wendell HOLMES, Snr. (1809-1894). Elsie Venner: a romance of destiny. Boston: Ticknor & Fields, 1861. 2 volumes, octavo (7 1/8 x 4 1/2in; 181 x 114mm). Pp. [i-]xii[-13]-288. [i-]iv[-5]-312; [1]-16. Advert page at the front of vol.I, half-title to vol.I; vol.II with no half-title and 16 pages of publisher’s ads (dated ‘February 1861') at the end. (Toned, about six leaves somewhat crudely opened, with small resultant chips to the margins.) Original cloth, blocked in blind, spines also lettered in gilt, brown glazed endpapers (extremities a little bumped, slight 'lean' to vol.I). Provenance: Peter Cagger (1814-1868, bookplate in each volume).

First edition, and apparently second issue. “The character of Elsie Venner may have been modeled on the famous feminist pioneer Margaret Fuller whom Holmes knew from his school days in Cambridge” (wikipedia). This copy with an interesting provenance (see below).

‘Elsie Venner: A Romance of Destiny is an 1861 novel by American author and physician Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Later dubbed the first of his \"medicated novels\", it tells the story of a… young woman whose mother was bitten by a rattlesnake while pregnant, which imbued the child with some characteristics of the reptile.’ (wikipedia).

Cagger is described as an “Attorney, businessman, and political figure. He graduated from Canada's College of Chambly, studied law and became an attorney. The Albany area's most prominent lawyer, he was also involved in politics, and with Dean Richmond and August Belmont controlled New York's Democratic party during the mid 1800s. Cagger was also prominent in business circles, serving as a Director of the National Commercial Bank and a Trustee of the Atlantic Mutual Life Insurance Company. He died as the result of a carriage accident that occurred while he was riding through New York City's Central Park.” (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/77146502/peter-cagger)
