Magnificent original Buddhist Butsudan or "Buddha altar" with Kannon Bosatsu or Guānyin Japan, ca. 1600 In gold lacquered wood representing Kannon depicted in standing position with beautiful detailed lotus throne Dimensions Butsudan approx. : 32,8 cm high, 29,5 cm wide (open) , 13,5 cm wide (closed) , 9,5 cm deep. Kannon on base approx. 27,2 cm high A very rare Japanese Buddhist shrine in remarkable condition given the age. Signs of aging (e. g. both arms and the left foot are missing) . Kannon (Chinese=Guānyīn) personifies compassion and is one of the most widely worshipped divinities in Asia and Japan. Kannon literally means watchful listening, is often translated as “one who sees / hears all. ” An exceptional collectors item and very hard to come by especially of this age/beauty.
