Impressive very old gilded wooden statue of Amida 阿弥陀仏, Buddha of infinite light and life Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800 Large original statue: 40 cm high Agewear as depicted. See photos. Good condition. The pedal under the Lotus throne ihas been replaced later. Signs of age related wear such as loss of paint and gilt. Amida is depicted in standing position with its hands in Vitarka Mudra. The meaning of this gesture is that wisdom is accessible to all. The outstretched hand shows Amida's compassion to all. A very rare Japanese Buddhist statue in remarkable condition given the age. See for example the beautiful serene face, elongated ears (all-hearing) and curly hair.
