Y A FLEMISH, EBONY, EBONISED, TORTOISESHELL AND IVORY CABINET ON STAND PROBABLY ANTWERP, MID TO LATE 17TH CENTURY With upper lidded compartment above doors opening to an arrangement of drawers around a central cupboard door, the interior decorated with inset painted copper panels depicting scenes from Classical mythology to include: to inside of doors "The Judgment of Midas" after Jan van den Hoecke, "Landscape with Minerva and the Muses" after Guilliam Forchondt the Elder, smaller drawers and top with panels depicting Hercules and the Abduction of Deianira, Perseus and Andromeda etc 174cm high, 111cm wide, 51cm deep A close comparison can be made with the present lot and the mid-17th century Antwerp cabinet at Burghley House (Ref: FUR0871c). The Burghley cabinet was recorded in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule, an inventory listing an extensive bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703) where it was listed as .'A Large Ebony Cabinet painted with Landscapes and figures on the outside". Clearly it seems to draw upon the same atelier of painters working at the period with near identical panels to insides of the two doors. A related cabinet on stand sold in these rooms 23rd June 2023, Lot 10, (£20,000 excl. BP). For another closely related cabinet on stand with comparable painted panels see Christie's, Important Early European Furniture, Sculpture and Tapestries, London, 8th November 2007, Lot 138, (£46,100 incl. BP). Please note, Dreweatts have applied for a de minimis exemption certificate for the ivory in this lot (Ref: 2LR1T3UT). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old chips, splits and cracks Various old repairs to veneers and moulded elements Handles to the interior are possibly old replacements Four keys are present and operate all locks Some possible re-touching to ebonised finished in places Backboards appear to be later replacements Fabric lining to the interior of the top is a later addition The stand is possibly later 19th century associated, but is difficult to determine on account of ebonised finished. The left hand cabinet door does not hold open and tends to swing inwards. The painted panels with the expected slight discolouration and fragmentary losses, there is a larger section of loss and subsequent repair to the left hand door panel adjacent to the soldier's head - see images. The mirror panels to the interior of the central section with the expected depletion, losses and bloom. Please see all additional images as a visual reference to condition.
