Y A REGENCE TORTOISESHELL, BRASS MARQUETRY AND ORMOLU MOUNTED COMMODE, CIRCA 1720
Y A REGENCE TORTOISESHELL, BRASS MARQUETRY AND ORMOLU MOUNTED COMMODE IN THE MANNER OF ANDRE CHARLES BOULLE, CIRCA 1720 Scarlet tortoiseshell ground inlaid with gilt brass decoration in the manner of Berain, the top with now inset a tooled leather panel above three long drawers, on bracket feet 88cm high, 127.5cm wide, 61.5cm deep Condition Report: Commode with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. As illustrated, commode is in distressed condition overall, and will require significant restoration. The top, with later tooled leather inset, it is possible, the piece originally had a marquetry top which conformed with the rest. A section of ormolu moulding to one side detached but present. It appears that the ormolu elements have been re-gilded or significantly cleaned at some point and re-applied. It appears that the marquetry sections have had a later surface/shallac applied, this has since decayed/worn and has produced a flaky/cloudy surface. Various old repairs in places throughout. Key present but only operates the upper lock. Some evidence of old worm. The feet to one side are detached and broken but present with the lot. Please refer to additional images for visual reference.
