At age 30, after managing a nature reserve in the Allier region, he traveled to Kenya with his wife Anne to study the behavior of a lion family for three years. He quickly began using photography to document his observations and discovered his calling: telling stories through images. Upon his return to France, he published *Lions*, the first of more than 80 books, and became a photojournalist for *National Geographic*, *Paris Match*, and *Géo*. In the 1980s, he cultivated his passion for aerial photography, preferably from a hot-air balloon. In 1991, he founded Altitude, the world’s first aerial photography agency, and turned his attention to long-term projects, while exploring humanity’s connection to both wild and domesticated nature. On the occasion of the first Rio Conference in 1992, Yann Arthus-Bertrand launched a major photographic project on the state of the world and its inhabitants: *Earth from Above*. The book was a global success (over 4 million copies in 27 languages), and the accompanying photo exhibition, presented in some 100 countries, was seen by 200 million people. Building on his commitment, he then founded the GoodPlanet Foundation to “put ecology at the heart of people’s consciousness.”
