Catalogue Note:
Yi To builds her canvases slowly, applying layers of thinned-down oil paint to stack and weave divergent patterns. Her compositions are made intuitively, revealed through fragments of form and color that exist within a “pre-narrative" state. Figures shape-shift within layered compositions that are thick with somatic memory. The use of marble dust and a restrained, earthy palette elicit worlds of archeology - carbon fossils and terrestrial bio-signatures; potsherd from antiquity; desert geo-glyphs; limestone reliefs, and the remnants of early cave-painting. Sedimentary striations give way to a taught, gossamer surface upon which isolated figures surface and fade, in a nonlinear narrative of decay and regeneration.

Yi To (b. Hong Kong, 1995) is a London-based artist who received her MA in painting from the Royal College of Art and her BA from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Select exhibitions include: The Glass Bead Game, MAMOTH, London (2021); Entrainment, Someday, New York (2021); Our Home, This Mortal Coil, Ione & Mann, Cromwell Place, London (2021); Deep Cut, Asylum Chapel, London (2021) and Snapshot, Hockney Gallery, Royal College of Art, London (2020). To was a finalist for the 2021 Hopper Prize. Her first solo exhibition in New York was held at Someday in March of 2022.
