ZENITH

EL PRIMERO, REF G583
YELLOW GOLD CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH DATE
CIRCA 1969

Dial: gilt
Calibre: cal. 3019 PHC automatic, 31 jewels
Case: 18k yellow gold, snap-on back
Case number: 0'09E'361
Closure: gold plated Zenith buckle
Dimensions: 37 mm
Signed: case, dial and movement
Accessories: none

The El Primero legacy started in 1969, when Zenith released what they claim to be the world's first automatic chronograph caliber. The high-beat caliber is notoriously running at 36'000 vph, ensuring increased time-measuring accuracy and an unmatched ability to break seconds down. The first gold El Primero watches to see light were produced in small batches, making them difficult to find in today's market.

The present El Primero ref. G583 is said to have been produced in roughly 350 examples and can be found with several dial configurations. The golden dial with a tachymeter scale stands among the most valued iterations, such as on this lot, which is fitted with its original Zenith gold plated star buckle and strap.

Condition Report:
MVT: running at the time of cataloguing, date advances, chronograph starts, stops and resets.
CASE: in good overall condition with signs of previous polishing and light surface wear throughout. The hallmark to the bottom of the lug at 7 o'clock and the case number to the case back are fully legible.
DIAL: in good overall condition with light staining throughout, visible under strong lighting. The tachymeter graduation for 100 shows some missing ink. With minor losses of black ink to some of the indexes, visible under strong magnification. Chronograph hand possibly later.

Please note that the movement has not been tested for the accuracy of time and may need a service at the buyer's expense. Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement and we do not guarantee the authenticity of any individual component parts since subsequent repairs and restoration work may have resulted in the replacement of original parts.

You are advised that watch straps or bands made of materials derived from endangered or otherwise protected species (i.e. alligator or crocodile) are not sold with the watch and we reserve the right to remove these straps or bands prior to shipping. Furthermore, the watch may not come with its original manufacturers strap or band.

Prospective bidders should review the Conditions of Business, Authenticity Guarantee, the Guide for Prospective Buyers, and any Important Notice in the sale catalogue.

Please note: Condition 16 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable for this lot.
