Zapotec Pottery Deity Incensario

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban IV, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A mold-formed pottery incensario in the form of a seated god, perhaps the god of maize Pitao Cozobi or even Cocijo, the god of rain and lightning. The seated deity presents with thick arms placed beside the hips, a portly abdomen beneath a frilled collar, and broad shoulders. The neck of the vessel displays an abstract visage boasting circular eyes, an upturned nose, bared teeth and tongue, and spool-adorned ears, all beneath furrowed incised brows. Traces of original red and black pigment are visible along the obverse, and faint ochre-yellow pigment can be seen on the verso. Size: 3.375" W x 4.4" H (8.6 cm x 11.2 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: Losses to lower body and areas of rim above forehead as shown. Light abrasions to body, arms, and head, with softening to some finer details, fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits and faint traces of original pigment throughout.
