Zizenhausen figure, Basel, 19th century, "Totentanz" (Dance of Death), colored clay, "Der Prediger auf Kanzel" (The Preacher in Pulpit), height 14,5 cm x 12 cm, small damages, rare figure.
The model for these groups of figures were the engravings of the Swiss-German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian published in 1621. These engravings go back to a painting from the late Middle Ages, which was painted on the inside of the cemetery wall near the Predigerkirche in Basel.
