c. 1923 MacDonald Gill designed 'Tube' map

[ translate ]

Leslie ‘Max’ MacDonald GILL (1884-1947, designer).

Map of the Underground Railways of London. London, Dunstable & Watford: printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd. [Undated, but with date code for 1st November 1923]. Folding map (14 5/8 x 17 ¾ inches; 372 x 451mm), printed in colors, recto in red and black with two other smaller maps and useful information about the city. (Small tears at folds).

Designed in 1920, this map was the first to leave out the geographic background: this approach reached it’s logical conclusion with Harry Beck’s 1931 topological map. The main map includes three larger red dots in the Wembley area which the key informs us are indicators of the position of the ‘British Empire Exhibition Stations’: the exhibition ran from 23 April – 1st Nov. 1924, then again from 9 May – 31st October 1925. This example was probably removed from a contemporary guide book.
