c1890 Gouache Portrait of Wm Shakespeare by Wm Hatherell

A beautiful, very finely detailed gouache painting of William Shakespeare outside the Tower of London, by the famous book and magazine illustrator William Hatherell R.I..
The painting shows a romanticised version of the bard, with the canal and drawbridge, behind. The painting was most likely produced as an illustration and dates from around 1890. The painting is one of a series that was exhibited in 1985, at Stratford-upon-Avon. The painting is mounted, glazed and framed. On the reverse is the Gallery label, describing it as part of an exhibition called ‘A walk with William Shakespeare’ and the title of the painting is ‘At the Tower of London’.
William Hatherell (1855-1928) was a painter of literary and sentimental genre, and illustrator. Hatherell first worked in the City. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1877-9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. As opposed to other artists that sacrificed quality for speed, in order to meet publishing deadlines, William Hatherell was adamant in not rushing his work.
He worked for Cassell's E M Delafield, a prolific English author. She is best known for her largely autobiographical Diary of a Provincial Lady, which took the form of a journal of the life of an upper-middle class Englishwoman, living mostly in a Devon village of the 1930s.
