Shango dance wand of the Yoruba. One of the most famous deities in the Yoruba pantheon is Shango, the god of thunder and lightning. The most famous symbol of the Shango cult is the Ose Shango dance wand depicting two thunder bolts in the form of a double axe. The Shango Cult was so prevalent throughout almost all of the entire land of the Yoruba because, according to their beliefs, the god is the fourth king in the Oyo Empire, which ruled over numerous Yoruba kingdoms. The Shango Cult became the national cult of Oyo, and his shamans acted as ambassadors and representatives of the Alaafin of Oyo in the vassal states. In the hereafter of the cult, Shango manifests as thunder and lightning, hurling thunderbolts (edun ara.) from the sky, setting on fire the bush and houses. Wherever the lightning strikes, the Shango shamans gather the LIGHTNING BOLTS and bring them in embroidered leather shoulder bags (laba,) to the shrine of the god. There, they store the stones in large wooden bowls or calabashes, along with dance wands and gourd rattles, and feed them offerings. Dimensions: h: 37 cm, w: 10 cm, d: 7 cm, (incl. stand) . The custom-made stand is made of iron. The upper point on the right has a small chip. Shipping: insured shipping via DHL with tracking number. Provenance: Lothar Heubel, Cologne
