Kashan is an ancient city, located on the road from Tehran to Isfahan; a city rich in history and monuments, with a great tradition in rug weaving. Even at the time of the Safavid dynasty, Kashan was renowned for the craftsmanship and sophistication of its weavers, so much so that a royal rug weaving workshop once stood in the city, to which many polonaise rugs can be attributed. There followed a period of decadence that lasted until the mid 19th century, The production of this period has left many specimens, which has turned the Kashan rugs of the late 19th century into the most renowned of the antique Persian rugs.
