mud fish - Cyclurus kehreri - 93×45×2,5 cm

[ translate ]

Mudfish (Cyclurus kehreri) found in Messel, Germany. One of the largest specimens ever discovered at this site - length of the fish 63cm! Age: approximately 48 million years Fossil was removed from oil shale matrix by resin transfer. (Resin transfer is a common process for this site, as the local slate is too moist and not stable enough) Subsequently, a new resin body was cast for the fossil, so that it lies centred on the replicated matrix. The surface was then lovingly recreated after the original oil shale in Messel.
