(t) CHINA. China - Germany. Li Hung Chang's Visit to Hamburg Silvered Copper Medal, ND (1896). NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines.

L&M-934A. Diameter: 40 mm. Obverse: Facing bust, wearing cap with legend around; Reverse: Legend and date in five lines. Struck to commemorate the state visit of imperial viceroy Li Huang Chang (Li Hongzhang) to Hamburg. Features a handsome and striking portrait of the viceroy and steely surfaces touched by brightness at the raised points of contact. The noted hairlines present minor marks, and hardly diminish the presentability of the medal. The silver wash conceals the underlying copper well, with very few exceptions that merely peer through the recesses of the designs. RARE and not often offered on market.

Li Hung Chang was an diplomat and politician who rose to prominence during the waning years of the Ching Dynasty. He strove to undertake reforms in China, and was a zealous defender of Chinese interest in an era of tremendous power disparity between China and the Western Powers and Japan. In 1896 he undertook a goodwill tour of Europe, the United States, and Canada. During this visit he attended the coronation of Nicholas II in Russia, spent time in Hamburg, witnessed a Royal Naval review in England, and gave a famous interview with the New York Times. He died in 1901 after nearly 50 years of service to the Qing Dynasty, and only a decade before the end of the Empire of China.

Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
