L&M-888; K-803; Y-504; WS-1334. A sublime example of this EXTREMELY RARE Soviet issue. A notoriously crude issue, this type prompted Eduard Kann to remark that it "...almost invariably is badly stamped, so that one rarely meets it in perfect condition; usually a part of the design remains invisible." The present coin defies Kann's generalization: Each character on the outer legends of both sides remains distinctly legible, with the central devices equally clear and fully struck. A hint of doubling on the obverse stands as the only notable manufacturing imperfection. Just as much as for its quality, this coin stands apart for its remarkable preservation. PCGS notes just a single finer example to date, putting this survivor near the pinnacle of what a collector could ask for in the type. An even coat of charcoal gray tone over the surfaces lends a ruggedly handsome appearance. Easily the finest example we have offered to date, this coin will doubtlessly inspire many competitive bids.
