By SCHOPPE, Julius [1795-1868], GÄRTNER, Eduard [1801-1877] Et Al.].
2 Volumes. oblong folio. pp. 1 p.l., [13]. lithographed title, 2 hand-coloured lithographed views on India paper, mounted, 9 hand-coloured lithographed plates on India paper, mounted, 1 hand-coloured lithographed interior view, & 11 (of 12) hand-coloured lithographed views of the procession. original printed bds. with new cloth ties, rebacked (edges rubbed, mounting sheets for the 9 middle plates browned, light soiling & spotting to outer edge of first processional plate). First Edition of this record of the grand celebrations which took place in honour of the birthday of Alexandra Fyodorovna, Empress of Russia (wife of Czar Nicholas I), born Princess Charlotte of Prussia [1798-1860], who was then in Berlin on a visit to her father, King Frederick William III. The theme of the celebrations was the mediaeval legend of 'Blanchefleur' or the White Rose, a nickname given to Alexandra in childhood. Eleven of the fine hand-coloured plates by Ernst Gärtner, Julius Schoppe, Heinrich Stürmer, and Theodor Hosemann depict the procession of the participants in the tournament regaled in full mediaeval costume. Others depict exterior and interior views of the palace, including one showing the ball in the Grotto Hall, and allegorical tableaux of the Seasons, Virtues and other subjects. The two copies that have appeared at auction in the last fifteen years were lacking one of the 9 middle plates. The present copy is unusual in that all of the plates are hand-coloured rather than just the processional plates and the interior view. Lipperheide Sbb31. Vinet 779 ("Ouvrage de luxe qui n'a pas été mis dans le commerce.").
