España' Etching on Double Crown Menue Card.

'España' is a copper plate engraving which Hayter printed in a small edition, before this published edition for The Double Crown Club Dinner Menu (no.69) in London. Hayter addressed the club on 11 January, 1939 about engraving and this etching was presented on the menu. The etching is printed on hand made wove paper and is signed by the artist in pencil, still attached to the original The Double Crown Club Dinner Menu. The etching is a rich impression and has a touch of hand colouring in white and is also signed and dated in the plate. A rare and scarce item.Etching plate size: 125 x 87mm (5 x 3.5 inches)Sheet size 445 x 112mm (5.75 x 4.5 inches)Frame size: 550 x 400mmBlack & Moorehead Reference:127A copper plate engraving and scorper. This etching had three states, the last state was published as part of a portfolio title Fraternity . The portfolio, 'Fraternity' was printed in an edition of 101 copies, and had etchings in it by John Buckland Wright, Dalla Husband, Josef Hecht, Wassily Kandinsky, Roderick Mead, Joan Miró, Dolf Rieser, Luis Vargas besides Stanley William Hayter. The poem was written by Stephen Spender titled Fall of a City which was translated into French by Louis Aragon. The portfolio was sold in aid of the Spanish Republican Children s Fund.!n 1973, a second edition was published by Association American Artists as part of Hayter-Nine Engravings . This consisted of 100 copies plus artists proofs 1-XX printed by Hector Saunier and Rigmor Poenaru on Barcham Green Paper.The plate was finally cancelled by the signature being printed in reverse
