On Charlevoix's second trip to Canada in 1720, he was commissioned by the French Government to seek a route to the western sea. He journeyed to Lake Superior and descended the Mississippi, visiting the posts of what were then the extremities of the western frontier of New France.This is a translation of Volume Three of Charlevoix's `Histoire',1744, which recounted his two year journey through French North America. He was the only traveller of the first part of the eighteenth century to describe the interior of America. His history of New France was the first general history of Canada to be published.
