[4]f + 461 + [1]p. + last leaf with printer's device and imprint. With folding allegorical frontispiece engraving preceding title . Decorative woodcuts and initials. Contemporary deerskin blind-tooled with line borders and cartouches; spine lightly wormed in places. A rare Spanish illustrated, finely printed baroque book. The subject is a philosophical discourse on the trials and advantages of military life arranged in four books composed in elegant prose introduced with a splendid engraved frontispiece with allegories of warfare. The author develops his narrative whilst following a group of soldiers on an imaginary journey through Spain stopping at Barcelona, Valencia, and Tarragona. In book II he reflects on the qualities of an ideal general, citing a variety of historical examples and episodes; he also includes a chapter on the privileges enjoyed by the cadets at the Spanish military school. Book IV offers advice on cavalry and artillery. The volume ends with an appendix of political maxims. Pedro de la Puente y Hurtado de Ulloa (1605-67)fought in Germany with distinction as a Spanish dragoon colonel during the Thirty Years' War; he later served as military governor of the Tuscan coastal fortress of Orbetelo and successfully defended Pavia, as castellan (1652-58). His dedication is to Don Luis Mendez de Haro, Soto Mayor y Guzman, Duke of Olivares. An interesting example of accomplished hispanisized book production in Italy during the period of Spanish domination. Not recorded in the standard catalogues of American institutions; an attractive, exceptionally fresh copy; blank margins of pp.339-44 lightly waterstained, right margin of last leaf strengthened.Palau 240585 (lacking frontispiece); Vindel 2.297; not in British Library.
