Money Lenders
A colored print of a young man in the company of two money-lenders. Inscribed in the plate: Pubd Novemr. 8th. 1784 by W. Humphrey No. 227 Strand. The handsome young man is in a riding costume and has a star on his coat that suggests he is the Prince of Wales. He sits in a relaxed manner at a table set with a coffee service. Opposite him are two elderly money-lenders. One, wearing spectacles, is drawn with the stereotype profile and beard of a Jew and reads a long parchment with seal while his partner looks on with a grin of satisfaction. The Royal Collection Trust, England has a copy of this print that is of particular interest. The young man is the earliest satire on the Prince¿s increasingly large debts and that print was purchased by the Prince of Wales from William Humphrey for 2 shillings on December 9, 1784. The Prince did not collect the more vicious caricatures made of himself, but he must have found this image amusing rather than offensive.
