Large quarto, two volumes, [viii] (first blank), 352 pages plus a mounted Woodburytype portrait frontispiece of Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Roberts (125 × 90 mm) and a colour-printed folding map and 5 full-page maps (3 with hand-colouring), and [vi], 274 pages plus 20 pages each containing 7 oval Woodburytype portraits (each measuring 50 × 38 mm) of the 140 officers who lost their lives, and an errata slip tipped in on the contents page. Original gilt-decorated full maroon morocco, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; extremities slightly rubbed; minimal offsetting to the verso of the front free endpaper and the adjacent page; essentially a fine set in superb bindings. Loosely inserted is an albumen paper photograph (170 × 110 mm) mounted on card (300 × 230 mm, with the rubber-stamp credit of the photographers T. and R. Annan of Glasgow) of the memorial tablet in Glasgow Cathedral to Major Alexander Dunlop Anderson (see Plate 1 and pages 1 and 2 of the Biographical Division).
