[ translate ]

By WHISTLER, JAMES MCNEILL.
(Chicago 34 II/II; Levy 38; Way 25)Second state of two. Transfer lithograph in black with scraping, printed on fine laid paper with the water mark O.W.P. & A.C.L. There is an impurity in the paper to the left of the arm-see photo. The watermark in the paper suggests that this is a posthumous edition of 55 copies printed by Goulding in 1904. (The stone is preserved in the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow.)This is a portrait of his sister-in-law, Ethel Birnie Philip. The sister would have been about 29 years old when Whistler originally drew the plate.(Way states that there were 22 impressions from the first state. This was also issued in The Whirlwind, 1890. Impressions for The Whirlwind were printed by machine from supplementary stones in a somewhat blacker and shinier ink that that used for hand pulled proofs; Whirlwind impressions are therefore generally higher in contrast. The sheet size for the Whirlwind edition should be 284 x 225 mm. There were 500-1000 impressions of this published edition)Image size 179 x 174 mmSheet size 370 x 260mm (14 7/8 x 10 3/8 inches)
