Reliure d'époque (Bradel le Jeune) en plein veau marbré, dos lisses profusément ornés de roulettes, fers et fleurons. Pièces de titre en maroquin rouge, pièces de tomaison en maroquin vert. Triples filets dorés sur les plats, filets dorés sur les champs, roulettes dorées aux contre-plats.Reliure et corps d'ouvrage en état exceptionnel de conservation, hormis quelques petites rousseurs sur les premières pages. Provenant de la bibliothèque du colonel Perry (ex-libris dans l'Atlas), célèbre collectionneur britannique, l'ouvrage est enrichi d'une lettre manuscrite du conservateur du British Museum, George Barwick, datée du 4 juin 1912, lui donnant des précisions sur les différentes éditions disponibles en français et en anglais. J'espère que cet ouvrage exceptionnel, par son état de conservation et sa provenance, trouvera sa place dans la bibliothèque d'un érudit qui l'appréciera et saura le conserver. First edition in astounding shape, five volumes including the Atlas. Contains 31 fine double-page engraved maps, including one folding, and one with original hand-colour in outline. Rare 18th century binding by famous master-binder Bradel le Jeune, our specimen is uniformly bound in fine mottled tan calf, each cover with a broad border of three gilt roll tool lines, smooth spine with six compartments, red morocco title labels and dark green morocco lettering-pieces in two compartments, the others decorated with elaborate trellis patterns and decorative gilt motifs. Lightly mottled edges. Large margins. Very slight foxing on the bastard title pages and occasionally inside, but very rarely, the laid paper being in an incredibly good condition. Interesting provenance, from the collection of Colonel Perry, a famous british bibliophile (his ex-libris is in the Atlas). We include a manuscript letter to the Colonel from G. Barwick of the British Museum, dated 1912, confirming it's a first edition. Unrepeatable.
