By Juan, Don George; and Don Antoine Ulloa.
554 pp.; 309 pp. First French edition; text in French; later, 3/4 brown calf with speckled, beige boards; raised cords; gilt lettering stamped across the spine; red and white headbands; edges stained red; illustrations; maps; 2 f.p.s; 53 plates, most folding; binding tight; boards very clean; internally crisp with light foxing; see additional images provided. Juan and Ulloa were the two Spanish officers who accompanied (some say spied on) La Condamine, the French scientist/explorer, on his travels and experiments in Ecuador from 1730 to 1741. Both men were acting as expedition security officers (reporting to the Spanish King) as no foreigner (La Condamine was French and therefore suspect) had yet to travel in New Spain. After returning to Spain they compiled a scholarly explanation of their journey with La Condamine and published their own scientific findings. These volumes have many fold-out maps and charts and two exquisite frontispieces. Volume I: Voyage au Perou, Premiere Partie. Quito. Navigation du Callao ? Guayaquil, & remarques ? ce fujet. Voyage fait ?
