Scarce German edition of Virginia. - copper engraved map; overall 32 x 38,5 cm; plate 29,5 x 36,5 cm. fold as issued; edges frayed; some minute marginal tears; paper evenly toned with some foxing and staining; top left corner repaired; o/w vg cond. - A most beautifully decorated map of Virginia, engraved by Matheus Merian who was de Bry s son-in-law, and based on John Smith s map, originally published in de Bry s Grand Voyages . This map is from the German edition Newe Welt und Americanische Historien by Ludwig Gottfried, a German geographer who worked closely with Matheus Merian. - The map with North orientated to the right, shows in great detail the Chesapeake Bay and is decorated with trees and markers for dwellings. A compass rose is within the sea; the Royal coat-of-arms are in the top right part of the map, next to a depiction of a Native. In the top left part of the map is a scene of the chief Powhatan in a longhouse with members of his tribe as he presented himself to Captain Smith . - This is a scarce map to find and is a real addition to any collection. - Burden 219, Tooley (America) p163/4 derivative 3
