Volume 6 is illustrated with a very large folding map of 1787 Russia and 3 additional folding maps and 122 plates from engravings (including frontis from volume 1). Rebacked in new half brown calf with original marbled boards. Two gilt lettered maroon labels on back of spine of each volume and 5 raised bands on spine of each volume. Armorial bookplate of William Henry Fitten, M.D. On front pastedown of each volume. Some minor soiling, mainly on the edges otherwise a very attractive set. Scarce. very good M.P.S. Pallas (1741-1811) was a German doctor who lived most of his life in Russia and was commissioned by Catherine II to conduct scientific expeditions though Central Asia and Russia. He recorded the geology, fauna and flora of the regions as well as describing the sights, animals, costumes and architecture of the various inhabitants. First French edition after the first German published in St. Petersburg. William Henry Fitten was a British geologist/doctor who published a number of early 19th century works on geology/paleonotology. He was awarded the Wollaston medal in 1852.
